An
Illustrated History
Part
1 - Blame the Pogo Stick
The
world of Sauria, and all that followed it, was conceived
on a rather boring school day back in 1989. In the midst
of the harrowing seventh grade. I wasn't what one would
exactly call, popular, in fact I was pretty much the opposite…though
what would you expect from a boy who's favorite recess activity
was sifting gravel through his wildly bushy hair?
I
was in some general science class in the Canon City Junior
High, feeling somewhat bored by the lecture and pondering
my perceived lack of friends while doodling on my folder
(one of those paper ones with the bendy clasp things in
the middle). The lecture droned on and my mind wandered
to one of my favorite Christian shows (the kind that you
could only really find on VHS back then), McGee
& Me.
McGee & Me was a show about a young boy who drew a cartoon
character named McGee who would come "alive" and they would
have fun adventures together. All of a sudden a few neurons
shorted out and I got the brilliant idea that I could create
my own cartoon friend to go on adventures with.
I
scanned over the doodles on my notebook and one in particular
caught my eye. One so full of promise and mystery that only
it could fulfill my longing for adventures. The picture
was very simply….
A
dinosaur on a pogo stick.
What
was his name? Where did he live? Did he have any friends?
Any enemies? And perhaps most importantly: Why was he on
a pogo stick?
All
these questions swamped through my interest-deprived brain.
And that was the moment of conception, the first crack in
the egg hatching a new world. I didn't know it then though.
All
I wanted was a simple cartoon friend…what I got would change
my life.
